Legal and Self-Advocacy Support

The MS Society of Canada aims to improve quality of life for people living with MS by increasing access to legal and advocacy supports. While services vary by region, the MS Society is continually developing a range of services that will benefit people living with MS who often face advocacy and/or legal challenges in the areas of disability rights, housing, employment, income security, etc. Additionally, applications for Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D) benefits (as well as other income security applications) are very complex and are more likely to be successful when you are well supported with resources and/or experts.

Self-Advocacy Tools

Adjusting to a diagnosis of a chronic illness like MS is a journey that requires information, support, and courage. The MS Society of Canada has resources that can play a role in your journey.

How to Fill Out an Application for Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits is a step-by-step resource guide to submitting a successful application for CPP-D benefits. (This is applicable to Canadians living outside of Quebec). Please note: As of August 27, 2018 there have been updates made to the CPP-D Benefits application forms. We are working on updating our resource guide to reflect these changes.

Symptom and Function Questionnaire is a tool that is designed to help identify, clarify, and focus your specific experiences with MS in your day-to-day life. This is applicable to all Canadians.

This questionnaire can be used for:

  • Preparing for Canada Pension Plan – Disability applications
  • Preparing for Quebec Pension Plan – Disability applications
  • Preparing for long-term disability applications
  • Preparing for provincial benefit applications
  • Preparing for Disability Tax Credit applications
  • Sharing with doctors and specialists to clarify symptoms and be concise during short appointments
  • Personal tracking of symptoms

Legal Services

Lawyers can be expensive and aren’t always familiar with MS and the specific legal needs/issues that may arrive. Our Pro Bono legal assistance offers connections to free legal services from lawyers who are familiar with the challenges associated with MS. Currently this program is available in two regions and will be rolling out in additional regions in the future.

BC & Yukon Division / Ontario & Nunavut Division

These divisions currently offer free legal services for individuals living with MS who qualify financially and who are dealing with specific legal concerns covered by the program.
